President Donald Trump to Meet Vladimir Putin in Alaska Amid Proposed Ukraine Peace Deal

President Donald Trump announced Friday evening that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska — just hours after outlining the terms of a possible peace deal to end the war in Ukraine, which could involve a “swapping of territories.”

“The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow,” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky quickly rejected the idea of any territorial concessions, declaring in a video address that while Ukraine is ready to “work together with President Trump,” his people “will not give their land to the occupier.”

The announcement comes on the day Trump had set as the deadline for Putin to either make peace or face severe economic sanctions. It marks a pivotal moment in US-Russia relations — Putin has not been to the US since 2015, and he has not met Trump since 2019.

According to Western officials briefed on the matter, Trump and senior US officials have discussed with European and Ukrainian leaders a proposal from Putin to halt the war. The plan, presented to Trump’s foreign envoy Steve Witkoff in Moscow on Wednesday, would require Ukraine to cede the eastern Donbas region — largely under Russian occupation — and Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

While the proposal would freeze current battle lines, its finer details remain unclear. European officials have expressed alarm, viewing it as a tactic by Putin to avoid Trump’s threatened sanctions without offering significant concessions.

Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov confirmed the Alaska meeting, saying it “seems quite logical” for such a summit to take place there, given the proximity of Russia’s Bering Strait border. Ushakov also revealed that Putin has invited Trump for a follow-up meeting in Russia.

Unresolved issues include the fate of Zaporizhzhia and Kherson — regions partially occupied by Russia — and Putin’s other demands, such as a pledge that Ukraine never join NATO and that it restrict the size of its military.

Witkoff has told European officials that Putin’s proposal is “a step in the right direction,” suggesting that a broader peace deal could follow once the fighting stops. However, some European leaders worry that officially recognizing territory seized by force could embolden Russia to launch further attacks in the future.

Despite recent frustrations with Putin over the prolonged conflict, Trump struck an optimistic tone on Friday. “The European leaders want to see peace. President Putin, I believe, wants to see peace, and Zelensky wants to see peace,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “My instinct really tells me that we have a shot at it.”

Still, the idea of Ukraine surrendering territory remains a major obstacle to any agreement, as it runs counter to Ukraine’s stated goals.

Earlier this week, Trump had vowed to impose new sanctions on Russia if Putin did not end the war by Friday, but on Thursday he signaled a softer stance, saying, “It’s going to be up to (Putin)” whether the deadline holds. He also confirmed that Putin does not need to meet Zelensky before sitting down with him.

Trump and Putin met six times during Trump’s first term, mostly at G20 and APEC summits. Their last meeting was in July 2018 in Helsinki — a summit that sparked controversy when Trump appeared to side with Putin over US intelligence agencies.

The last meeting between a US president and Putin was in June 2021, when Putin met then-President Joe Biden in Geneva, Switzerland.
