Terror Strikes Pahalgam: 28 Killed in Brutal Militant Attack on Tourists in Kashmir
On April 22, 2025, a devastating terrorist attack occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 individuals and injuries to over 20 others. The assault took place in Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination known as "mini Switzerland" for its scenic beauty. Around 2:30 PM, militants, reportedly dressed in military fatigues and armed with M4 carbines and AK-47s, opened fire on a group of tourists enjoying pony rides. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers singled out victims based on their faith, forcing them to recite religious verses before shooting them at close range. Among the victims were Indian nationals from various states, as well as foreign nationals from Nepal and the UAE. Notably, a 26-year-old Indian Navy officer and an Intelligence Bureau official were among those killed .
The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack, citing opposition to alleged demographic changes in the region. Security forces launched a joint operation to apprehend the perpetrators, releasing sketches of three suspects believed to be involved .
In the aftermath, the Indian government condemned the attack as a "heinous act" and vowed to pursue the perpetrators. In response, India downgraded diplomatic ties with Pakistan, recalling defense staff, reducing embassy personnel, and halting a bilateral water-sharing treaty. Pakistan criticized the action as "water warfare" and denied involvement in the attack .
International leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressed strong support for India and condemned the violence. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs also emphasized opposition to terrorism and offered condolences to the victims
The attack has sparked widespread condemnation and raised concerns about the safety of tourists in the region. Authorities continue to investigate the incident and work towards ensuring justice for the victims.
